Lithium-ion Battery: The Difference Between Ternary Lithium, Lithium Iron Phosphate and Lithium Manganese Oxide

Lithium-ion Battery: The Difference Between Ternary Lithium, Lithium Iron Phosphate and Lithium Manganese Oxide

Lithium batteries are an important part of modern technology and are widely used in smart phones, mobile power supplies, power tools, new energy vehicles and other equipment. Lithium-ion batteries use carbon materials as negative electrodes and lithium-containing compounds as positive electrodes. According to different positive electrode compounds, common lithium-ion batteries include ternary lithium-ion batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries, lithium manganese oxide batteries, etc.

The differences between different lithium batteries are mainly reflected in positive electrode materials, energy density, safety, life, cost and application areas. The following is a comparison of some common lithium battery types and their characteristics:

1. Ternary Lithium-ion Battery

The ternary lithium-ion battery we often talk about is a ternary polymer lithium-ion battery, which refers to a lithium-ion battery whose positive electrode material uses a ternary positive electrode material of lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide or lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide.

Advantages: Lithium-ion batteries made of ternary materials have higher capacity and better cycle life; good rate discharge.

Application: Mainly used in electric vehicles, portable electronic products and power tools.

Before using lithium batteries, we can use battery capacity testing machine to test them. The battery charge discharge tester is a device specially used for lithium battery performance testing. It evaluates key parameters such as battery capacity and internal resistance through charge and discharge tests, and performs cycle life tests, etc., to ensure the overall performance and life of the battery pack.

2. Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery

Lithium iron phosphate battery refers to a lithium-ion battery that uses lithium iron phosphate as the positive electrode material. It has good safety performance, high cycle life (about 1500 times), and good high temperature performance. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are generally considered to be green and environmentally friendly batteries that do not contain any heavy metals and rare metals, and are non-toxic and pollution-free. The reason why lithium iron phosphate batteries are favored by the industry is mainly due to environmental protection considerations.
Advantages: high safety, long life, and low cost.
Application: Very popular in new energy vehicles, outdoor power supplies, photovoltaic energy storage and other fields.

We can use battery aging machine to perform charge and discharge aging tests and evaluations on lithium battery packs. Battery aging machine verifies the performance, reliability and life of lithium batteries by simulating the charge and discharge environment under actual use conditions, which helps to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the pack in different environments and improve the stability and reliability of the pack in actual applications.

3. Lithium Manganate Ion Battery

As the name implies, lithium manganate ion battery uses lithium manganate as the positive electrode material, and lithium manganate is one of the more promising lithium ion positive electrode materials. Lithium manganate ion batteries are widely used for their low cost, pollution-free, high safety, and good rate performance. In addition, lithium manganate has good low-temperature performance, and can achieve an efficiency of more than 90% at a low temperature of minus 20 degrees.
Advantages: low cost, good safety.
Application: commonly used in power tools, mobile power supplies and some cost-effective electric vehicles.

Summary comparison: In terms of safety, lithium iron phosphate and lithium manganate are safer for lithium ion batteries made of the three materials. In terms of capacity, ternary lithium and lithium manganate are better. Lithium iron phosphate ion batteries have the longest cycle life, while lithium manganate ion batteries have obvious advantages in production cost and applicable temperature.

When choosing a lithium battery, you need to decide which type of battery to use based on specific application requirements and budget. For example, for electric vehicles that require high energy density and long driving range, ternary lithium batteries may be chosen; while for applications that require high safety and long life, such as energy storage systems, lithium iron phosphate batteries may be chosen.
