Planetary Ball Mill VS. Conventional Ball Mill

The working principle of a conventional ball mill: The rotating drum allows grinding balls to fall freely under gravity and impact the sample, achieving crushing and mixing. However, it has low energy efficiency, long grinding time, and difficulty in processing ultrafine particles.

The working principle of a planetary ball mill: Through planetary motion (the drum revolves around the main shaft while rotating on its own axis), high-intensity collisions and shear forces are generated between the grinding balls and the sample under centrifugal force. This concentrates and releases energy, resulting in an exponential increase in grinding efficiency.

Furthermore, planetary ball mills are essential equipment for improving the performance of all-solid-state lithium batteries: All-solid-state batteries use solid-state electrodes and solid-state electrolytes. The positive electrode material of solid-state batteries is not significantly different from that of liquid electrolyte batteries, while the negative electrode material mainly uses metallic lithium, lithium alloys, or silicon-based negative electrodes. Unlike liquid lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes instead of the liquid electrolyte and separator. The core of solid-state batteries lies in developing solid electrolytes with high mechanical properties, high ionic conductivity, excellent electrochemical and thermal stability, and compatibility with electrode materials. Ball milling technology is commonly used in the development of solid electrolytes to process solid electrolyte materials and improve the performance of all-solid-state batteries.

A task that might take a conventional ball mill 10 hours to complete can be finished in 4-5 hours, or even less, by a planetary ball mill!

The Grinding Principle of a Planetary Ball Mill

During the grinding process in a planetary ball mill, the material is pulverized by the impact, compression, and friction of the grinding balls. In fact, the pulverization process is extremely complex. Studying a single particle, it is repeatedly subjected to the aforementioned stresses during ball milling, causing existing or newly formed cracks in the particle to continuously expand, leading to breakage or plastic deformation.

As particles become smaller, the cracks on them become finer, reducing the probability of cracks at minimum fracture stress. The grinding force increases to a point where the particles undergo plastic deformation, making further grinding difficult once a certain particle size is reached. Therefore, prolonged ball milling is meaningless and only increases energy consumption because ultrafine particles cannot accumulate the elastic energy required for crack propagation.

In fact, the essence of the grinding principle of planetary ball mills is currently only understood through experimental reasoning or intuition. The actual ball milling process is much more complex than described above. The crushing of material particles varies due to interactions between particles, between particles and the grinding jar, between particles and the grinding balls, and the chemical interactions between particles.

The three core advantages of planetary ball mills:

Double energy density: The centrifugal acceleration of planetary motion can reach 20-40g (compared to only 1g in ordinary ball mills), resulting in a surge in grinding ball kinetic energy, easily crushing nanoscale hard materials (such as silicon carbide and ceramics).

Multi-dimensional grinding path: Unlike conventional ball mills where the grinding balls follow a single trajectory, planetary ball mills utilize centrifugal force and rotational reaction force to create complex three-dimensional motion, achieving uniform grinding without dead angles.

Intelligent temperature control: Some high-end planetary ball mills are equipped with a circulating cooling system to prevent thermal decomposition of samples during prolonged operation (conventional ball mills are often forced to shut down due to overheating).
